TimberCAM is a carbon accounting model that tracks the fate of carbon stored in wood products through their life cycle from harvest through to manufacture, service and disposal. It draws together the results of several study areas developed within the "Life cycle of carbon in wood products" project within the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Accounting (CRCGA) – an Australian research group.
TimberCAM accounts for the carbon stored not only in the product itself but also in the residues created in all stages of the life cycle of the product. TimberCAM incorporates the carbon stored in products in service and in landfill, as well as the carbon that is not emitted into the atmosphere by using redundant products or residues instead of fossil fuels.
The focus of the model is primarily on carbon stored in wood products; as such it does not take into consideration the emissions associated with harvesting of trees and processing of the timber.
