The paper argues that economic forces drive biodiversity losses, implying that the assessment of biodiversity decline requires an understanding and assessment of these economic forces. In order to redress the decline of diversity it will be necessary to reshape the economic incentives that cause human societies to choose systematically to reshape the living world in the way that they do.
