Communities, Conservation and Markets project
The Communities, Conservation and Markets project’s (CCM) mission is to provide strategies, tools and knowledge networks that integrate sustainable agriculture and land management with conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services that contribute to rural productivity and livelihoods. The focus is on supporting rural resource managers to sustainably manage their landscapes using ecoagriculture approaches and payments for ecosystem services (PES). The overall goal is to enhance investments in rural areas and improve local and regional policies to benefit both communities and environmental conservation efforts. The website has various thematic groups including ecosystem service payments & markets, ecosystem service tools, learning networks, landscape indicators, and policies for integrating land use & ecosystems. Toolkit to assess and minimize negative impacts multi-sectoral policies on forests and their biodiversity released by the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD)
Forests and their biodiversity exist in a multi-sectoral context. As such, forest conservation cannot be successful without examining and reducing potential negative effects of other sectors on forests. The toolkit released by the CBD is based on experiences from many partners including the Centre for International Forest Research (CIFOR), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) as well as the results of projects funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The report summarizes information on policy approaches based on various case studies in Africa, Asia and Latin America that aim to minimize the negative impacts of other sectoral policies on forests and their biodiversity. The case studies showcased include examples where property rights were modified (Uganda), where ecotourism was introduced (Indonesia) or where payments for ecosystem services (PES) schemes were implemented (Costa Rica). Compensation schemes, including PES, are identified- without being detailed further- as great potentials to reduce natural habitats degradation if properly implemented, The report concludes with a list of potential policies that could help protect forest biodiversity, most of which are related to reducing agricultural impacts on the forest sector.
Agriculture and Climate Change: FAO web portal provides tools to make the link
The FAO website Climpag aims at linking together the various aspects and interactions of weather, climate and agriculture in the context of food security. The website contains methodologies and tools to understand and analyze the effects of climate variability and climate on agriculture as well as data and maps to spatially ground specific projects. The website is separated in six sections including Advice and Warnings, Climatic Indicators, Data and Maps, Hotspots and Natural Disasters. Of particular interest to Community Forum readers are the climate maps at the global and regional levels, a climate estimator for locations lacking nearby climate observing stations, links to farm radio stations and know-how in early climate warning for agriculture as well as links to a variety of reports and tools linking agriculture and climate change.
New journal for research on climate and development for researchers, NGOs and community leaders from the South
Richard Klein from the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has established a new academic journal entitled Climate and Development. The journal attempts to incorporate research undertaken in developing countries by NGOs, local academics, and others which is usually unavailable to the broader science and development community. To address barriers to publication by these groups, Climate and Development is holding "Writeshops" in developing countries on how to prepare papers that meet present scientific standards. The first of these writeshops was held last month in Bangkok. Publishers hope to hold 4 or 5 such writeshops per year over the next 4 years. The program is also establishing a mentoring program between developing country authors and established academics to help them in the development of the full paper. The journal will also feature "case studies" which will be shorter than full papers and subject to a simpler, although still rigorous, peer review. The journal is currently looking for an editor, look at our opportunities section for more details. Look for more news on the subject in future editions of the Community Forum.
Women for Climate Justice launches a new platform for information, knowledge and networking on gender and climate change

New e-newsletter on effects of land use and landscape management on livelihoods and environmental services in tropical forest margins
The ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins, a consortium of Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centers, national-level research institutes and other partners, is proud to announce a new e-newsletter. The monthly ASB e-news covers the latest research and events related to the effects of land-use and landscape management on livelihoods, carbon stocks and other environmental services in the tropical forest margins. It also covers the latest methods, empirical results, and implications of research for policy and program design. ASB’s comparative research in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia provides robust analyses of the opportunity costs of deforestation, tradeoffs associated with different land uses, and alternative policy solutions. For REDD to work, it must take account of these human dimensions of deforestation and land use in the tropics.

International Development in the Face of Climate Change: Beyond Mainstreaming?
Location: London | June 2, 2008 You are warmly invited to join us for the DFID-DSA policy forum, "International Development in the Face of Climate Change: Beyond Mainstreaming?" to be held on Monday, June 2, 2008. The event has been
organized by the Natural Resources Institute (University of Greenwich), Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. The forum will be held in London at the Maritime Greenwich Campus, University of Greenwich.
As is well known, climate change has many implications for development and global futures: for sustainability, equity and growth. Much current debate and policy action focuses on resolving future problems through the 'mainstreaming' of climate change into development initiatives. However, does our global future and international development planning and practice need to be restructured in more fundamental ways? What alternative pathways for development need to be identified for different regions of the world? And crucially, what is realistic and achievable given the current political environment?
This policy-focused forum will promote discussion between policy-makers and researchers in order to generate new thinking about how international development could be re-oriented and restructured, seeking synergies of understanding and constructive elaboration of differences. Participants will include UK government advisers and program managers and climate change experts from international agencies, NGOs and academia. The day will begin with keynote speakers and case studies, followed by a series of focused working groups. Documentation will be available before the session for the working groups to stimulate discussion.
Global Katoomba Meeting XII: Developing an Infrastructure Fund for the Planet
Location: Washington, D.C. | June 8-9, 2008 We'd like to invite you to Global Katoomba Meeting XII (http://katoombagroup.org/chesapeake), June 9-10, 2008, at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
This leading forum brings together leading policy makers, major financial institutions, business leaders, the environmental community and local indigenous groups to discuss the current scope and potential of ecosystem markets – carbon, water, biodiversity – to address environmental problems. Climate change, water pollution, and biodiversity loss threatens the natural infrastructure of our planet and human well-being, but the time is ripe for a major event to drive action and bring together these different sectors to develop strategies that will match the scale and urgency of the environmental issues we face today.
The meeting's schedule includes keynote speeches by leading public and private figure (see the working agenda) and moderated discussions among a panel of environmental and market experts. During the moderated discussions, panelists will update us on the current state of the ecosystem markets, identify the challenges that must be overcome, and share proven approaches that can be built upon in the future.
On behalf of Katoomba and our co-sponsors, including World Resources Institute, the Smithsonian Institute, the Packard Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, EPRI, the U.S. Forest Service, USAID, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, we hope you will be able to join us for this timely and important event. Every effort is being made to accommodate all participants, but pre-registration can only be assured through May 31.
