Getting in the Groove

As April dawns at the Ecosystem Marketplace, there is a clear sense that 2006 is now hitting its stride when it comes to payments for ecosystem services. We kicked off March with a big picture look at conservation in the United States from Adam Davis, our strategic advisor. Legislative setbacks will occur in the field of conservation, Davis reasons, but the smart money is increasingly on the side of those pushing to make our economy and environment ever more sustainable. Investors, businesses, non-profit environmental groups, concerned citizens and government agencies all increasingly believe in striking a long-term balance that will enable economic development and environmental protection to fuel one another. The new mitigation banking rules we’re covering are a clear example of this larger trend. And that, thinks Adam, is pretty groovy.

The environmental footprint of farming is huge; more than half of the continental U.S. is cropped or grazed. And while farming is at the root of many environmental problems, it can also be a powerful conserving force. One of the most intriguing opportunities to encourage this stewardship is the 2007 U.S. Farm Bill. The Ecosystem Marketplace finds out why.

OPINION
by Doug Bruggeman
Environmental markets work best when based on quantifiable estimates of ecological services. Markets for endangered species habitat are currently based on a poor surrogate for biodiversity services, namely habitat area. Researchers at Michigan State University have taken a fresh look at the problem, integrating theories in evolutionary ecology with economics. Doug Bruggeman shares the results of his research with the Ecosystem Marketplace.

Environmental news in the United States has been challenging in recent months, but Adam Davis—one of the founders of the Ecosystem Marketplace—recommends stepping back for a minute to take stock of the fact that regulatory setbacks will probably be temporary, while hard-won private sector support for conservation (and environmental markets) is here to stay.
